Opportunity to engage with York University
York University have asked to work with Girlguiding North Yorkshire South to develop girls’ interest by providing access to astronomy and science education. They have a strong team of female academics and outreach staff who are excellent role models for showing girls that careers in science and astronomy are for everyone. It is well known that there are still low numbers of female students in degrees such as physics, engineering and maths. This is mainly linked to perceptions of these subjects as 'boy subjects' from an early age, so it is really important to try and break this stereotype and engage girls with science.
Recently 3 rd Copmanthorpe Brownies had an amazing evening at the Astrocampus. They looked at incredible telescopes, held an actual meteor and made their own meteorites, it was a great start to the Brownie Space Badge. If your unit would like to visit Astrocampus please contact the Physics Outreach Team
