             County Commissioner welcome

Firstly, a huge THANK YOU! All of our 157 Levels (units, Districts etc) posted their annual subscription before the deadline with only 2 encountering a problem. This has saved our Treasurer a large amount of additional work which is really appreciated. We are also doing really well in keeping up to date with the mandatory Safe Practice requirements (A Safe Space Training and DBS checks). Remember you no longer lose out if you do your e-learning early, you will have the extra time added on to your next renewal date.

One area where we could do with your help please is with Young Leaders and Young External Volunteers, who also have to do A Safe Space e-learning. If your unit has the support of a young volunteer, please check they have done the required training, and if not help them to do so. To access the Learning Platform the volunteer will need to have an active GO account with their own email address (not their mum’s, especially if she is also a Girlguiding member!). Any problems speak to your local commissioner.

Talking about GO, Diane, our County GO Coordinator, is holding a training / problem solving “surgery” on 11 June at Acomb Library (see below) for limited numbers. Book early to avoid disappointment.

So, Admin sorted – let the fun begin! We hope you get out and about with your units during the Spring and Summer months, on meeting nights, special events and residentials – Let’s go!

See you at St George’s Day on 24th April

Alison and Lesley

Opportunity to engage with York University

York University have asked to work with Girlguiding North Yorkshire South to develop girls’ interest by providing access to astronomy and science education. They have a strong team of female academics and outreach staff who are excellent role models for showing girls that careers in science and astronomy are for everyone. It is well known that there are still low numbers of female students in degrees such as physics, engineering and maths.  This is mainly linked to perceptions of these subjects as 'boy subjects' from an early age, so it is really important to try and break this stereotype and engage girls with science.

Recently 3rd Copmanthorpe Brownies had an amazing evening at the Astrocampus.  They looked at incredible telescopes, held an actual meteor and made their own meteorites, it was a great start to the Brownie Space Badge. If your unit would like to visit Astrocampus please contact the Physics Outreach Team

There are a limited number of places available of a Region Training from 13th-15th May for new Peer Educators.
