             County Commissioner welcome

We have been chatting about the things we remember about belonging to a youth organisation as girls. The activities that had the most impact on us, both at the time and in later life, involved nights spent away from home with our friends and leaders, whether indoors or in tents. We remember laughter and learning, independence and inclusivity, and above all a sense of achievement and self-worth – we did it!!

As leaders, time away with the girls is when we really get to know them and see them blossom as they realise what they can do, whether that is peel a potato or paddle a canoe!

These experiences have been really restricted over the last couple of years, but we can now get back into the swing of residentials again and we have some county opportunities to help:
  • Lesley is throwing open the door of her Pack Holiday on 26th March for you to visit, pick up some hints and tips and see the redecorated White Rose House (see below for details)
  • Alison is hosting a training by Anne Esslemont on 9 April for those who want to refresh their knowledge or who want to look into the Going Away With Scheme (more details next month)
  • And don’t forget the County Camp in June, where you can bring your girls along without the need for a qualification. Bookings and deposit due on 20 February
We hope to see you at one or all of these!

Limerick Competition
February 2022

The Scout County Creative Activities Team is launching a limerick competition on the theme of “This is Yorkshire”. The competition is open to everyone involved in Scouting and Guiding in the County of North Yorkshire (from Squirrels and Rainbows through to adults).  We will put all the best entries on our website and there will be prizes for the top entries in each section.

A limerick is a five-line poem with a bouncy rhythm, it can be serious, but is usually funny or just silly! Limericks have certain rules:
  • The first two lines each contain 8 or 9 syllables and rhyme with each other.
  • The 3rd and 4th lines each contain 5 or 6 syllables and rhyme with each other.
  • The last line has 8 or 9 syllables and rhymes with the first two lines.
The competition will be open for submission until 28 February 2022, any entry received beyond that date will not be judged.

All entries must be submitted with the name of the author, section (Beaver, Brownie etc), Scout or Guide group, District plus Guide County details, an email or postal contact and confirmation that the limerick is all the entrant’s own work.  The entries will be judged in the appropriate section, all judging will be anonymous and the decisions of the judges will be final.
