             County Commissioner welcome

Happy New Year, we hope you had lovely Christmas. We are thankful that the pandemic rules allowed some events to take place in 2021.  We have seen Units, Districts and Divisions organising sleepovers, camps, outings and parties, creating some amazing memories for the girls and young women in NYS. The County Rainbow Santa Special event saw 145 volunteers and Rainbows enjoy an amazing trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway before Christmas; one Rainbow told her leader “This was the best day ever” - that everyone, is why we do what we do.

Whilst the pandemic is still causing some restrictions, we are looking forward to a better 2022 where we should try to:

Let go of what’s gone,
Be grateful for what remains
Look forward to what’s coming.

Whilst we are mindful of possible limitations, we are pressing on with our plans for the coming year, the main events being:
  • County Camp 2022 “Back to Basics” to be held 2 – 5 June at Glenbrook Activity Centre in Derbyshire.  (Flyer issued)
  • Volunteers Training Weekend at Waddow, Clitheroe, 2- 4 September 2022.
Please tell us what you think, will you take part?
  • Is your unit coming to camp?  What activities would you like to see included?
  • Will you attend the training weekend?  Are there any specific areas you would like included?
Please email Alison and Lesley with your views and suggestions.

As we start the new term of 2022 one of the most important tasks at this time of year is to make sure unit, district and division GO records are up to date.  There is more information on the Girlguiding website about Subscriptions 2022.  These pages also detail how to pay your subscription.

Key Dates for your diary

  • 8 February: A reminder email will be sent to the main contact of any level that has not yet checked their trial invoice.

Region one and three year service badges

You may have read about the new Region one and three year service awards in the recent Region Newsletter. The County Team have agreed to purchase these for volunteers who reach these qualifying periods in 2022 and thereafter.

County Day update

In the last Newsletter we asked you to Save the Date for a County Day event on Saturday 5 February. Then the news hit about rising Covid infections and we all waited with bated breath to see if Christmas would be cancelled! Given the highly contagious nature of the Omicron variant we have taken the disappointing decision to postpone this event until the summertime when we can combine it with our Thanks and Recognition celebration and hold it outdoors if necessary.

We hope you understand

Limerick Competition
February 2022

To start the New Year with a burst of creativity, The Scout County Creative Activities Team is launching a limerick competition on the theme of “This is Yorkshire”. The competition is open to everyone involved in Scouting and Guiding in the County of North Yorkshire (from Squirrels and Rainbows through to adults).  We will put all the best entries on our website and there will be prizes for the top entries in each section.

A limerick is a five-line poem with a bouncy rhythm, it can be serious, but is usually funny or just silly! Limericks have certain rules:

  • The first two lines each contain 8 or 9 syllables and rhyme with each other.
  • The 3rd and 4th lines each contain 5 or 6 syllables and rhyme with each other.
  • The last line has 8 or 9 syllables and rhymes with the first two lines.

To give you an idea as to what we mean, here is an example of a limerick
In a well-tended garden there grows
A beautiful white Yorkshire rose.
It's not just good luck,
But the well-rotted muck
That brings out the blossom tha' knows

The competition will be open for submission by 28 February 2022, any entry received beyond that date will not be judged. Entries must be submitted to the following email address only:  creative@nys.org.uk

All entries must be submitted with the name of the author, section (Beaver, Brownie etc), Scout or Guide group, District plus Guide County details, an email or postal contact and confirmation that the limerick is all the entrant’s own work.  The entries will be judged in the appropriate section, all judging will be anonymous and the decisions of the judges will be final.

If you need to complete the training and are not available on this date please let Elizabeth know and she can advise on whether there are any other trainings in a neighbouring county with spaces.
Photography Competition 2022
‘Celebration’

The Scouts North Yorkshire Creative Activities Team is running another photographic competition for all members of Scouting and Guiding within North Yorkshire.  Again this year it will be in four sections following the seasons of the year with a common theme of Celebration.  The four seasons will run as follows:
  • Winter from January to March inclusive
  • Spring from April to June inclusive
  • Summer from July to September inclusive and
  • Autumn from October to December inclusive
So break out the cameras and phones and get started in ‘Winter.’  Feel free to interpret the theme of Celebration in in any way you like be it national celebrations; religious festivals of the year such as Easter, Ramadan, Diwali; Scouting/Guiding events such as Thinking Day, St George’s Day, Summer Camps; sporting events or just celebrating the seasons of the year.  Remember if you include people in your photographs, you must have permission for their image to be used.

Entries will be judged in the various sections from Rainbows and Squirrels through to Leaders and Active Support/Trefoil Guild.

As last year we will be happy to receive entries at the end of each season (with the first entries at the end of March), we will publish the best from each season on the relevant County website and then hold them over for eventual winners at the end of the year.  Each person may enter a maximum of five photographs per season, which must have been taken by the entrant, to the competition.  Submissions must be in digital jpg format, entries taken on camera phones will be accepted.

All photographs must be submitted with the name of the photographer, section (Squirrel, Brownie etc.), Scout or Guide group, District or Guide County details, an email and postal contact (to receive a certificate) and confirmation that the photograph(s) is all the entrant’s own work.  The entries will be judged in the appropriate section, all judging will be anonymous, and the decisions of the judges will be final.
