County Day update
In the last Newsletter we asked you to Save the Date for a County Day event on Saturday 5 February. Then the news hit about rising Covid infections and we all waited with bated breath to see if Christmas would be cancelled! Given the highly contagious nature of the Omicron variant we have taken the disappointing decision to postpone this event until the summertime when we can combine it with our Thanks and Recognition celebration and hold it outdoors if necessary.
We hope you understand

Limerick Competition
February 2022

To start the New Year with a burst of creativity, The Scout County Creative Activities Team is launching a limerick competition on the theme of “This is Yorkshire”. The competition is open to everyone involved in Scouting and Guiding in the County of North Yorkshire (from Squirrels and Rainbows through to adults). We will put all the best entries on our website and there will be prizes for the top entries in each section.
A limerick is a five-line poem with a bouncy rhythm, it can be serious, but is usually funny or just silly! Limericks have certain rules:
- The first two lines each contain 8 or 9 syllables and rhyme with each other.
- The 3rd and 4th lines each contain 5 or 6 syllables and rhyme with each other.
- The last line has 8 or 9 syllables and rhymes with the first two lines.
To give you an idea as to what we mean, here is an example of a limerick
In a well-tended garden there grows
A beautiful white Yorkshire rose.
It's not just good luck,
But the well-rotted muck
That brings out the blossom tha' knows
The competition will be open for submission by 28 February 2022, any entry received beyond that date will not be judged. Entries must be submitted to the following email address only: creative@nys.org.uk
All entries must be submitted with the name of the author, section (Beaver, Brownie etc), Scout or Guide group, District plus Guide County details, an email or postal contact and confirmation that the limerick is all the entrant’s own work. The entries will be judged in the appropriate section, all judging will be anonymous and the decisions of the judges will be final.

Photography Competition 2022
‘Celebration’

The Scouts North Yorkshire Creative Activities Team is running another photographic competition for all members of Scouting and Guiding within North Yorkshire. Again this year it will be in four sections following the seasons of the year with a common theme of Celebration. The four seasons will run as follows:
- Winter from January to March inclusive
- Spring from April to June inclusive
- Summer from July to September inclusive and
- Autumn from October to December inclusive
So break out the cameras and phones and get started in ‘Winter.’ Feel free to interpret the theme of Celebration in in any way you like be it national celebrations; religious festivals of the year such as Easter, Ramadan, Diwali; Scouting/Guiding events such as Thinking Day, St George’s Day, Summer Camps; sporting events or just celebrating the seasons of the year. Remember if you include people in your photographs, you must have permission for their image to be used.
Entries will be judged in the various sections from Rainbows and Squirrels through to Leaders and Active Support/Trefoil Guild.
As last year we will be happy to receive entries at the end of each season (with the first entries at the end of March), we will publish the best from each season on the relevant County website and then hold them over for eventual winners at the end of the year. Each person may enter a maximum of five photographs per season, which must have been taken by the entrant, to the competition. Submissions must be in digital jpg format, entries taken on camera phones will be accepted.
All photographs must be submitted with the name of the photographer, section (Squirrel, Brownie etc.), Scout or Guide group, District or Guide County details, an email and postal contact (to receive a certificate) and confirmation that the photograph(s) is all the entrant’s own work. The entries will be judged in the appropriate section, all judging will be anonymous, and the decisions of the judges will be final.
