             County Commissioner welcome

New Year – fresh start!

I don’t know about you, but I always start a new year with lots of optimism and good intentions. I am going to have my unit Programme done for the term, my in-box will be empty and all my action points from meetings will be done! At this point my unit team, the County Secretary and anyone waiting for me to do something for them will be at best, giggling, but probably rolling their eyes in disbelief!! Ladies, I will continue to do my best!!

As a County team we are also doing our best to be on the ball with our administration and plans. You can now access our 2023 Training and Events calendar via our website so you can plan to meet your training needs and which events you would like to offer to your girls. We don’t have all the details finalised as yet, but this will be continually updated as dates are confirmed so please keep checking on the website. Coming soon we will be sharing our Strategic Plan up to April 25 to span the handover to the next County Commissioner(s).

The new year also brings a change to the email address for key county personnel. We now have role specific emails ending in @girlguidingnys.org.uk. This means these can be publicised on the website and handed on to the next person when the role holder changes. The new addresses can be found on the website (see here) but don’t worry if you have recently used an old address – we are accessing both old and new one for a transitionary period!

At our next County Meeting we are looking at how effective our communications are across the county so if you have any feedback or ideas, please let us know.

Finally, Lesley is visiting family in New Zealand until the beginning of March so please contact me if you need anything over the next couple of months. I promise I will do my best!

Happy New Year

Alison
University of York Engineering Challenge

Scouts and Guides from across the county are invited to a day at the University of York to test their creativity, ingenuity and engineering skills. Teams of 3 to 5 people will be challenged by using the materials provided to make an egg move as far as possible without breaking it. That could be on wheels, wings, or simply launching it through the air!

When: Sunday 12th March, 10am to 3pm
Where: Exhibition Centre, University of York
Further details: Here

Scouts and Guides wanting to enter will need to be in a team of 3 to 5 people (maximum 70 teams).
Register by 31 January 2023 by contacting
John Ives

Crisis, what financial crisis?

What: A Question and Answer session on Zoom, with Dr. Peter Wagner, Lecturer in Economics, York University for Rangers and Young Leaders (and Scouting friends)

When: Wednesday 25 January 2023, 19:00-20:30

Following on from previous sessions for Explorers and Rangers about politics and policing, Peter will lead a stimulating discussion around the causes of inflation and the cost of living crisis.

We will want to collate some questions in advance, so do encourage your young people to research how prices have changed over the last 30 years, plus how incomes have changed over the same time period, and why.  Let's consider the implications, in particular poverty, and what can be done about it.

Further information to follow.

Larkin Jamboree 2024

North Yorkshire Scouts are planning an International Jamboree in 2024. This will be held the 27th July to 3rd August 2024 at Duncombe Park, Helmsley. There is a website and leaders are encourages to sign up for updates, so they get information as it is released. We would love Guide and Ranger units to join us at the Jamboree for a week of fun and adventure. Brownies and Rainbows will also be able to join in the fun with their own programmes.

Adults also have the option to be part of the organising team or the service team at the event and if leaders would like to do that, then they can use the Volunteer button on the website - we would love to see lots of Girlguiding members help deliver this International Jamboree in 2024!
